What Happened When You Believed?

When you placed your faith in Jesus Christ, God did far more than forgive your past. By His grace, He brought you into a new life and a new relationship with Himself.

Salvation begins with God’s love. Before we ever sought Him, God loved us and sent His Son to save us.

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. —Romans 5:8

Jesus died for our sins and rose again, and God freely gives salvation to everyone who trusts in Him.

By grace you have been saved through faith. —Ephesians 2:8

So what happened when you believed? Scripture describes several wonderful things God did for you.

You Were Forgiven and Declared Righteous

Sin separates every person from God. None of us could make ourselves righteous before Him.

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. —Romans 3:23

But God did not leave us without hope. In love, He sent His Son to bear the judgment our sins deserved.

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. —1 John 4:10

Jesus carried our sins on the cross so that everyone who trusts in Him can be forgiven.

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree. —1 Peter 2:24
Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. —Acts 10:43

God also justified you. To be justified means that God declares you righteous before Him. Your acceptance with God no longer rests on your ability to be good enough. It rests on Jesus Christ.

Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. —Romans 5:1

Because of Christ, you can live in peace with God rather than trying to earn His acceptance.

You Were Given New Life

Salvation did not simply change your record before God. God also gave you new spiritual life.

Before Christ, Scripture says that we were spiritually dead in sin.

You were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked. —Ephesians 2:1–2

But God acted because of His great love.

Because of the great love with which he loved us…[God] made us alive together with Christ. —Ephesians 2:4–5

Jesus described this new life as being born again.

Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. —John 3:3

This new birth is God’s work in you. He has begun a new life in which you can know Him, love Him, learn His ways, and grow in obedience to Him.

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. —2 Corinthians 5:17

You are not simply trying to become a better version of your old self. In Christ, God has made you new.

You Were Brought into Christ’s Kingdom

When God saved you, He also gave you a new home and a new King.

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son. —Colossians 1:13

You now belong to Jesus Christ.

You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. —1 Corinthians 6:19–20

Jesus is not only the Savior who rescued you; He is also the Lord who lovingly leads you. Following Him is not a way to earn salvation. It is the new life of someone who has already been rescued and brought into His kingdom.

You Received the Holy Spirit

God has not left you to live the Christian life alone. Everyone who belongs to Christ receives the Holy Spirit.

Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. —Romans 8:9

The Holy Spirit lives within believers. He gives life, helps us know God, assures us that we are His children, and begins changing us to become more like Christ.

You have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ —Romans 8:15

The Spirit is also God’s seal upon you—a promise that God intends to complete the salvation He has begun.

When you…believed in him, [you] were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. —Ephesians 1:13

Your new life with God therefore does not depend on your own strength. God Himself is present and at work in you.

You Received Eternal Life

When you believed in Christ, you also received eternal life.

God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. —John 3:16

Eternal life includes the wonderful future God has promised His people, but it also begins now. Through Christ, you have already passed from death to life. Heaven will be your eternal home.

Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. —John 5:24

You will still face temptation, weakness, suffering, and eventually physical death unless Christ returns first. But these things do not undo what God has done. In Christ, condemnation has been removed, eternal life has begun, and your future belongs to Him.

Salvation Is God’s Gracious Work

When you look at everything that happened when you believed, one truth becomes clear: salvation is much greater than a single human decision.

God forgave you. He declared you righteous. He gave you new life. He brought you into Christ’s kingdom. He gave you His Spirit. He gave you eternal life.

All of this is grace.

You did not earn these gifts, and you do not have to spend the Christian life trying to deserve them. You are called instead to receive them with faith, gratitude, and growing trust in the God who saved you.

  1. Trust in Christ rather than your own goodness or performance.
  2. Rest in the forgiveness and acceptance Jesus has secured for you.
  3. Walk in the new life God has given you.
  4. Gladly live under the good authority of Jesus Christ.
  5. Depend upon the Holy Spirit as He works within you.
  6. Rejoice in the eternal life God has given you through His Son.
  7. Thank God for the grace He has shown you in salvation.
