He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."— John 1:1-5 ESV

The Eternal Word

John 1:1-5 introduces Jesus as the eternal Word—present with God in the beginning and, in fact, God Himself. This passage not only speaks of Christ's divinity but also His role in creation. "All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made" (v. 3). Jesus is the divine agent of creation, meaning that all life, all existence, flows from Him. This truth highlights both the sovereignty and the authority of Jesus over all creation.

Christ is not a created being but the Creator Himself. The same Word who created the universe is the One who stepped into it through the Incarnation. His eternal existence before all things reveals His divinity, and it affirms that He is not only our Redeemer but also our Creator.

This has profound implications for discipleship: we are not following merely a great teacher or prophet, but the eternal Son of God, through whom everything exists. To know Jesus is to know the One who holds all things together by the power of His Word (Hebrews 1:3). Our lives, therefore, find their ultimate purpose and meaning in Him.

Scriptures to Study: Genesis 1:1-3, Colossians 1:15-17, Hebrews 1:1-3, Revelation 1:8

The Life and Light of Men

John goes on to reveal that "in him was life, and the life was the light of men" (v. 4). Jesus is the source of both physical and spiritual life. Just as God breathed life into Adam in Genesis, Jesus is the source of all true life, and this life brings light to a world darkened by sin. His life illuminates the hearts of those who believe, guiding us to God and opening our eyes to truth. Without the light of Christ, we are spiritually blind, lost in the darkness of sin and death.

The light of Jesus also represents truth and holiness, exposing sin and bringing the revelation of God’s character to a fallen world. The darkness, representing evil and sin, cannot overcome or extinguish this light. No matter how dark the world may seem, the light of Christ shines brightly and cannot be defeated. This is a message of hope for every believer: Christ’s light will always prevail over the darkness.

Scriptures to Study: John 8:12, 1 John 1:5-7, Psalm 36:9, 2 Corinthians 4:6, Ephesians 5:8-14

The Overcoming Light

Verse 5 declares, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." This is a declaration of the victory of Christ over all evil. The light of Jesus continues to shine despite opposition, persecution, and the presence of sin in the world. Darkness may attempt to resist or stifle the light, but it can never conquer it. Jesus' victory over sin and death through His death and resurrection ensures that His light remains victorious and will shine forever.

As followers of Christ, we are called to walk in His light, reflecting His life and truth in a dark world. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live as children of light (Ephesians 5:8), standing firm against the powers of darkness. Through daily reliance on the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, we can walk in the light and lead others to the source of true life—Jesus Christ.

Scriptures to Study: John 12:35-36, Romans 13:12, 1 Peter 2:9, Matthew 5:14-16

Summary of Key Points

Jesus is eternal and divine – He existed with God from the beginning and is Himself God.

Jesus is the Creator of all things – All creation was made through Him, and He is the source of life.

Jesus is the source of spiritual life – His life is the light that shines into the spiritual darkness of the world.

The darkness cannot overcome Jesus’ light – His light and truth will never be defeated by sin or evil.

Believers are called to reflect His light – We are to live in the light of Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit to overcome darkness.

The Holy Spirit empowers us – Through the Spirit, we walk in the light and share Christ's life and truth with others.

Life Application Questions

How does knowing that Jesus is the eternal Word and Creator impact your faith and trust in Him?

In what ways has Jesus been the light in your life? How can you allow His light to shine more brightly through you?

What steps can you take to ensure that you are living in the light of Christ rather than walking in the darkness? How does the Holy Spirit help you in this process?
