John 21:15-19

"When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.' He said to him, 'Feed my lambs.' He said to him a second time, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.' He said to him, 'Tend my sheep.' He said to him the third time, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me?' Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, 'Do you love me?' and he said to him, 'Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.' (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, 'Follow me.'" (John 21:15-19 ESV)

Restoration and Commissioning

In this passage, Jesus addresses Peter after His resurrection. The threefold question "Do you love me?" parallels Peter’s three denials of Jesus, offering a moment of restoration for Peter. Jesus, in His grace, does not leave Peter in his guilt but instead commissions him to care for His flock. By saying "Feed my lambs" and "Tend my sheep," Jesus entrusts Peter with the role of spiritual leadership and shepherding the Church.

This restoration highlights an essential principle of discipleship: failure is not final in the Kingdom of God. Jesus' grace redeems us from our past mistakes, and His calling for us remains steadfast. Peter’s denial of Christ could have disqualified him, but Jesus, through love and forgiveness, brings him back into a position of leadership. This reminds us that we are called to serve not because we are perfect but because of Christ's love and grace in us. The Holy Spirit empowers us to fulfill God's purposes, even when we feel unworthy.

Scriptures to Study:

Luke 22:31-34, 1 Peter 5:1-4, 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

A Call to Love and Shepherd

Jesus' repeated question, "Do you love me?" reveals that love for Christ is foundational to our mission as disciples. Our service to others—whether through ministry, teaching, or discipleship—must flow out of our deep love for Jesus. It is this love that compels us to care for His people. Jesus’ instruction to Peter to "feed" and "tend" His sheep emphasizes that discipleship is about nurturing and caring for the spiritual needs of others. We are called to guide, teach, and protect others in their walk with Christ.

Furthermore, shepherding requires humility and reliance on the Holy Spirit. Just as Peter was told to care for Christ’s flock, we too must depend on God’s strength and wisdom to serve well. The Word of God is our primary tool in tending to others, as it equips us with truth and wisdom. Through the Spirit and the Word, we can lead others closer to Christ, helping them grow in their faith and understanding of God.

Scriptures to Study:

John 10:11-14, 1 John 4:19-21, Acts 20:28-29

Following Christ, No Matter the Cost

In verses 18-19, Jesus foreshadows the kind of death Peter will experience, one that will glorify God. This moment reinforces the reality that discipleship involves sacrifice. Jesus calls Peter to follow Him, knowing it will ultimately lead to martyrdom. True discipleship is not always easy; it requires a willingness to surrender all, even unto death, for the sake of Christ. Peter's story is a reminder that following Jesus involves both the joy of restoration and the cost of commitment.

As believers, we are called to follow Christ in every area of life, no matter the challenges or sacrifices it may bring. This path requires total reliance on the Holy Spirit, who gives us the strength to endure hardship and remain faithful to our calling. Jesus’ final words, "Follow me," are not just for Peter, but for every disciple who desires to live a life that glorifies God.

Scriptures to Study:

Matthew 16:24-25, Philippians 1:20-21, 2 Timothy 4:6-8

Summary of Key Points

Jesus restores and commissions – Despite Peter's past failure, Jesus restores him and calls him to care for His flock.

Love for Christ is central to discipleship – Our service to others must be motivated by our love for Jesus.

Shepherding requires humility and reliance on God – We are called to guide others with the wisdom of the Word and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Discipleship involves sacrifice – Following Christ may involve suffering or hardship, but it brings ultimate glory to God.

The Holy Spirit empowers us to fulfill our calling – We cannot serve or follow Christ faithfully without the Spirit's strength and guidance.

Life Application Questions

How have you experienced Jesus' grace and restoration in your life after moments of failure?

What does it mean for you personally to "feed" and "tend" Christ's sheep in your sphere of influence?

Are there areas of your life where you struggle to follow Christ because of fear or the potential cost?
