John 1:35-51

"The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God!' The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, 'What are you seeking?' And they said to him, 'Rabbi' (which means Teacher), 'where are you staying?' He said to them, 'Come and you will see.' So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, 'We have found the Messiah' (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas' (which means Peter). The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, 'Follow me.' Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.' Nathanael said to him, 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' Philip said to him, 'Come and see.' Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, 'Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!' Nathanael said to him, 'How do you know me?' Jesus answered him, 'Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.' Nathanael answered him, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!' Jesus answered him, 'Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these.' And he said to him, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.'" (John 1:35-51 ESV)

The Call to Follow Jesus

In this passage, we witness the early calling of Jesus' first disciples. John the Baptist, who had been preparing the way for the Messiah, identifies Jesus as the "Lamb of God," directing his own disciples toward Jesus. This act of surrender by John highlights the central truth of discipleship: it is about pointing others to Christ, not ourselves. Andrew and another disciple follow Jesus, seeking to know where He is staying. Jesus' response, "Come and you will see," reflects His open invitation to all who are genuinely seeking to know Him.

Discipleship begins with a personal encounter with Jesus. It is a call to follow, to dwell with Him, and to experience the transformation that comes from abiding in His presence. Jesus invites us to come closer, to see who He truly is, and to walk with Him daily. This is not just a one-time decision but a lifelong journey of growing in relationship with Him. As Andrew brought his brother Simon to Jesus, we too are called to bring others to Christ, recognizing Him as the Messiah and Savior of the world.

Scriptures to Study:

Matthew 4:18-22, John 15:4-5, Luke 5:1-11, 2 Timothy 2:2

The Transforming Power of Jesus

When Simon meets Jesus, he is given a new name: Peter, meaning "rock." This is significant because it reveals Jesus' power to transform lives. Simon, an ordinary fisherman, would become Peter, a foundational leader in the early church. Jesus sees not just who we are, but who we will become through Him. He takes our weaknesses, our pasts, and even our doubts, and transforms them for His purposes. As Peter would later grow into his new identity, we also grow into the calling Jesus places on our lives through the work of the Holy Spirit.

This transformation comes from being with Jesus. As we spend time in His Word and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, we are changed. Our character, our priorities, and our purpose are realigned with God's will. Like Peter, each believer has a unique calling and role in the body of Christ, and our identity is found in Christ alone.

Scriptures to Study:

Matthew 16:16-18, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Ephesians 4:22-24, Romans 12:1-2

"Come and See" – A Personal Invitation

Philip, after being called by Jesus, invites Nathanael with the simple words, "Come and see." This is the heart of evangelism—inviting others to encounter Jesus personally. Nathanael is initially skeptical, asking, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" But when Nathanael comes to Jesus, his doubts are transformed into faith as Jesus reveals His knowledge of Nathanael's heart and actions. Jesus sees us where we are, even before we come to Him, and He calls us to deeper faith.

This invitation to "come and see" is still extended today. We do not need to have all the answers before coming to Jesus. He meets us in our doubts and questions, revealing His truth and power in ways we may not expect. Nathanael's story reminds us that encountering Jesus changes everything. Once we see Jesus for who He truly is—the Son of God and the King of Israel—our lives cannot remain the same.

Scriptures to Study:

Isaiah 55:6-7, Matthew 11:28-30, Revelation 22:17, Psalm 34:8

Greater Things to Come

Jesus concludes this passage by telling Nathanael that he will see "greater things"—specifically, the heavens opened and angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man. This is a reference to Jacob's dream in Genesis 28:12, where Jacob sees a ladder reaching to heaven. Jesus is now the fulfillment of that vision. He is the bridge between heaven and earth, the One through whom all blessings flow from God to humanity.

For believers, this promise of "greater things" is a reminder that following Jesus leads to a life of experiencing God's power and glory. Through the Holy Spirit, we are given access to the presence of God, and we are witnesses to His work in the world. As we continue to follow Jesus, we are invited to participate in His mission, to see His kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. The "greater things" include the miracles of transformed lives, the spread of the gospel, and the ultimate hope of eternal life with Christ.

Scriptures to Study:

Genesis 28:12, John 14:12-14, Acts 1:8, Ephesians 3:20-21

Summary of Key Points

Jesus invites us to follow Him – Discipleship begins with a personal encounter and a decision to follow Jesus.

Jesus transforms us – He changes our identity and calls us to a new purpose, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

We are called to bring others to Jesus – Like Andrew and Philip, we are to invite others to "come and see" Jesus for themselves.

Jesus knows us intimately – He sees our hearts and calls us to deeper faith, even in the midst of doubts.

There are greater things to come – Following Jesus opens the door to experiencing God's power, presence, and kingdom in our lives.

Life Application Questions

How has Jesus invited you to follow Him?
