John 20:1-10

"Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, 'They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.' So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes." (John 20:1-10, ESV)

The Empty Tomb: The Dawn of Resurrection Hope

This passage recounts the discovery of the empty tomb on the morning of Jesus' resurrection. The detail that Mary Magdalene found the tomb empty "while it was still dark" is significant. It speaks to the spiritual and emotional darkness the disciples were experiencing after the crucifixion. The empty tomb marks the beginning of a new dawn—resurrection hope breaking through the darkest moments of human history. The stone rolled away from the tomb is a physical symbol of the spiritual reality that death, sin, and the grave have been defeated in Christ.

The disciples, however, did not immediately understand what had happened. Their initial reaction was confusion and fear—Mary thought Jesus' body had been stolen, and Peter and John ran to investigate. Yet, as they entered the tomb and saw the grave clothes lying there, something began to change. John, the "disciple whom Jesus loved," saw the evidence and believed, though they still did not fully grasp the resurrection in light of Scripture. The empty tomb challenges us to trust in God’s promises even when we don’t fully comprehend His ways.

Scriptures to Study:

Psalm 16:10, Matthew 28:1-10, Luke 24:1-12, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

The Folded Grave Clothes: A Sign of Christ’s Victory

One of the details John gives us in this passage is the sight of the grave clothes and the face cloth, which was folded neatly in a separate place. This is not a trivial observation but a powerful testimony to the intentionality and order of Jesus' resurrection. The folded face cloth indicates that His body was not stolen in haste or disarray. It was a sign that Jesus had deliberately risen from the dead, leaving behind the grave clothes as a witness to His victory over death.

The folded cloth can also remind us of the peace and order that come from the resurrected Christ. Jesus' resurrection was not chaotic or accidental—it was the divine plan fulfilled. Through the Holy Spirit, we are called to live in the peace of this victory, knowing that Christ has conquered sin and death on our behalf. The resurrection invites us into a life of hope and order, no longer bound by the chaos of sin but walking in the power of the risen Lord.

Scriptures to Study:

Isaiah 25:8, Romans 6:9-11, Colossians 3:1-4, 1 Peter 1:3

Believing Without Fully Understanding

John "saw and believed" (v. 8), even though he and Peter did not yet fully understand the Scriptures that prophesied Jesus' resurrection. This moment shows the beginnings of faith, a belief that is not yet fully developed but is genuine. Discipleship often involves believing before we fully understand, trusting in God’s promises even when our minds cannot yet comprehend His plan. This is the essence of faith—walking in trust even when we don’t have all the answers.

For us, the Word of God and the Holy Spirit play essential roles in deepening our faith. As we grow in our understanding of Scripture, we begin to see how God’s plan unfolds, but there will always be aspects of our journey with Christ that require simple trust. The resurrection calls us to trust in the power and promise of God, even when we do not see the whole picture.

Scriptures to Study:

John 11:25-26, Hebrews 11:1, Romans 10:9-10, Proverbs 3:5-6

Summary of Key Points

The empty tomb signifies victory – The resurrection is the ultimate proof of Christ’s triumph over sin, death, and the grave.

The folded grave clothes symbolize peace and order – Jesus’ resurrection was not an act of chaos but a purposeful fulfillment of God’s plan.

Faith precedes full understanding – Like John, we are called to believe even when we don’t fully grasp God’s ways. Faith leads to greater understanding over time.

The Holy Spirit and the Word guide us in faith – Through the Holy Spirit and Scripture, our faith is strengthened and deepened as we grow in our understanding of God’s plan.

Life Application Questions

How does the empty tomb and Jesus’ resurrection give you hope in the midst of your own "dark" seasons of life?

In what ways does the peace and order of Jesus’ victory over death encourage you to trust in God's sovereignty over your life circumstances?

How can you grow in faith, trusting God even when you don’t fully understand His plan? How does the Holy Spirit help you in moments of doubt?
