John 12:20-36

"Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, 'Sir, we wish to see Jesus.' Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, 'The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? "Father, save me from this hour"? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.' Then a voice came from heaven: 'I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.' The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, 'An angel has spoken to him.' Jesus answered, 'This voice has come for your sake, not mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.' He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. So the crowd answered him, 'We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?' So Jesus said to them, 'The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.' When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them." (John 12:20-36 ESV)

The Hour of Glorification

In this passage, Jesus declares that "the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified" (v. 23). Throughout John's Gospel, Jesus speaks of His "hour," referring to the appointed time of His suffering, death, and resurrection. Now, with His crucifixion imminent, Jesus acknowledges that this is the moment when His mission will be fulfilled. His death on the cross is not a defeat, but the pathway to glory—not only for Himself but also for all who will believe in Him.

Jesus uses the metaphor of a grain of wheat to explain the necessity of His death. Just as a seed must fall into the ground and die in order to produce a harvest, so must Jesus die to bring eternal life to many. His sacrifice is the means by which spiritual fruit—salvation and new life—will be produced for all who believe. Discipleship, too, involves this same principle: we must die to self, letting go of our earthly attachments, in order to gain eternal life and bear fruit for God's kingdom.

This highlights the call to surrender our lives in service to Jesus. True life is found not in self-preservation or clinging to worldly desires, but in losing ourselves for the sake of Christ. Following Jesus means laying down our lives, just as He did, and trusting that God will honor those who serve Him (v. 26).

Scriptures to Study:

Matthew 16:24-26, Philippians 2:5-11, Romans 12:1, 1 Peter 2:24

The Purpose of the Cross

In verses 27-33, we see Jesus wrestling with the reality of the suffering He is about to endure. His soul is troubled, yet He submits to the Father's will, recognizing that His death is the purpose for which He came. Jesus prays, "Father, glorify your name" (v. 28), and God responds audibly, affirming that His name has been and will be glorified through Jesus' obedience and sacrifice.

The cross is not only the place of Christ’s suffering; it is the place where God’s glory is most fully revealed. Through the cross, God's justice and mercy meet. Jesus' death is the means by which "the ruler of this world" (Satan) is cast out, and through His resurrection, Jesus will draw all people to Himself (v. 31-32). The cross is central to the salvation of humanity and the defeat of the powers of darkness.

For disciples of Christ, the cross is not just a historical event but the lens through which we view our lives. It is the call to daily die to ourselves and take up our cross (Luke 9:23). As we do, we participate in Christ’s victory over sin and death, and through the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to live lives that glorify God.

Scriptures to Study:

Colossians 2:13-15, 1 Corinthians 1:18, Galatians 2:20, Luke 9:23

Walking in the Light

Jesus closes this section by exhorting the people to "walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you" (v. 35). He is the light of the world, and His presence among them is their opportunity to believe and become "sons of light" (v. 36). But the time is short—Jesus is preparing for His crucifixion, and soon the physical light of His presence will be taken from them.

This call to walk in the light is a call to faith. To walk in the light means to live in the truth of who Jesus is, embracing Him as Savior and Lord. It is to forsake the darkness of sin and unbelief and live in the freedom and joy that Christ offers. The Holy Spirit, given to believers after Jesus' ascension, enables us to walk in this light, guiding us into all truth and empowering us to live as children of God in a dark world (John 16:13).

As disciples, we are called to be "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14), reflecting the light of Christ to others. The light of Jesus in us shines through our words, our actions, and our love for others, pointing people to the source of true life and salvation.

Scriptures to Study:

John 8:12, Ephesians 5:8-10, 1 John 1:7, 2 Corinthians 4:6

Summary of Key Points

Jesus' hour of glorification – The cross is the moment of Christ’s glory and the fulfillment of His mission.

Death leads to life – Just as a grain of wheat must die to bear fruit, Jesus’ death brings eternal life, and disciples must die to self to gain eternal life.

The cross defeats darkness – Jesus’ death and resurrection cast out the ruler of this world and secure victory over sin and death.

Walk in the light – Believers are called to walk in the light of Christ, living in His truth and reflecting His light to others.

The Holy Spirit empowers us – Through the Spirit, we are enabled to live as children of light, bearing witness to Christ in a dark world.

Life Application Questions

How does the reality of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross affect your understanding of His love and glory?

What areas of your life do you need to surrender to Christ, trusting that dying to self will lead to greater fruitfulness?

How are you walking in the light of Christ in your daily life?
