John 19:31-42

"Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: 'Not one of his bones will be broken.' And again another Scripture says, 'They will look on him whom they have pierced.'

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there." (John 19:31-42 ESV)

The Fulfillment of Scripture in Christ's Death

John 19:31-42 details the aftermath of Jesus' crucifixion, focusing on His death and burial. One of the key themes in this passage is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. The soldiers, upon finding Jesus already dead, did not break His legs, fulfilling the Scripture, "Not one of his bones will be broken" (v. 36, referencing Psalm 34:20). Additionally, when a soldier pierced His side, the prophecy, "They will look on him whom they have pierced" (v. 37, referencing Zechariah 12:10), was also fulfilled. These details affirm the sovereign plan of God and that Jesus' death was not random or an accident, but rather, a divine fulfillment of God's redemptive purposes for humanity.

The unbroken bones remind us that Jesus is the perfect, unblemished Lamb of God. In the Old Testament, the Passover lamb had to be without defect (Exodus 12:46), pointing forward to Jesus' ultimate sacrifice. Jesus' body, unbroken, points to His perfection and His role as the sacrificial Lamb who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). These prophetic fulfillments show God's control over every detail of His Son’s death, reminding us of the trustworthiness of God's Word and the certainty of His promises.

Scriptures to Study:

Exodus 12:46, Psalm 34:20, Zechariah 12:10, Isaiah 53:7-9

The Symbolism of Blood and Water

When the soldier pierced Jesus' side, blood and water flowed out. This significant detail reveals not only the reality of Jesus' death but also carries deep theological meaning. Blood throughout Scripture represents sacrifice and atonement (Hebrews 9:22). Jesus' blood, shed on the cross, cleanses us from sin and brings us reconciliation with God. The water, on the other hand, can symbolize purification and the new life that Jesus offers through the Holy Spirit. As Jesus had earlier declared, "Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’" (John 7:38), the Spirit is the source of spiritual life and renewal for the believer.

This moment at the cross shows how Jesus’ death was not only a payment for sin but the very foundation for new spiritual life. The blood reminds us of our forgiveness and justification, while the water points to our sanctification and ongoing transformation through the Holy Spirit. As disciples of Christ, we are called to live in the power of this new life, relying on the Holy Spirit to continually renew and guide us into deeper relationship with God.

Scriptures to Study:

John 7:38-39, Ephesians 5:25-27, 1 John 5:6-8, Hebrews 9:22

The Boldness of Joseph and Nicodemus

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, both previously secret followers of Jesus, now step forward boldly to care for His body. Joseph, a respected member of the Jewish council, risks his reputation by asking Pilate for Jesus' body. Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus by night (John 3), brings a large quantity of burial spices. These acts of devotion contrast with their earlier secrecy and fear. In Jesus' death, they find the courage to publicly identify with Him, even when it might cost them greatly.

Their actions demonstrate the transformative power of Christ’s death. The cross compels a response, and for Joseph and Nicodemus, it moved them from fear to faith, from secrecy to boldness. For believers today, the cross still calls us to take up our own cross and follow Jesus without fear of what the world may think. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live boldly for Christ, even when facing opposition or ridicule. As we see in Joseph and Nicodemus, true discipleship often requires courage and a willingness to be identified with Jesus, no matter the cost.

Scriptures to Study:

Mark 15:43, John 3:1-2, Luke 9:23-26, Acts 4:13

Summary of Key Points

Jesus' death fulfilled prophecy – His unbroken bones and pierced side fulfilled Old Testament prophecies, affirming God's sovereign plan.

The blood and water symbolize atonement and new life – The blood points to our redemption and forgiveness, while the water represents the cleansing and renewing power of the Holy Spirit.

Joseph and Nicodemus demonstrate bold discipleship – Their willingness to publicly care for Jesus' body shows the courage that true discipleship requires.

The Holy Spirit empowers us – Through the Spirit, we find boldness to live for Christ openly, even in the face of fear or opposition.

Life Application Questions

How does the fulfillment of prophecy in Jesus’ death deepen your trust in the reliability of God’s Word?

What does the imagery of blood and water mean for your spiritual life?
