<p class="lead">God accepts us not because we have made ourselves righteous, but because the righteousness of Jesus Christ is counted as ours through faith.</p>

<p>When we recognize our sin, we may wonder how we can stand before a holy God. Even after believing, we still see weakness and failure in ourselves.</p>

<p>The gospel tells us that our standing with God does not depend on becoming good enough. God declares sinners righteous by His grace.</p>

<p>To be justified means to be declared righteous before God. It is not a reward we earn but a gift we receive.</p>

<h2>We Cannot Earn a Righteous Standing</h2>

<p>God is perfectly holy and just. Because every person has sinned, no one deserves His acceptance.</p>

<p>Comparing ourselves with others does not help. God’s standard is His own perfect righteousness.</p>

<p>Religious activity, good deeds, and personal improvement cannot erase our guilt or produce the obedience God requires.</p>

<p>This truth humbles us and teaches us to stop defending ourselves and trust the Savior God has provided.</p>

<h2>Jesus Stood in Our Place</h2>

<p>God did not ignore our sin. Jesus paid the price we owed for it.</p>

<p>He lived the righteous life we failed to live. He obeyed God perfectly and remained without sin. Then He willingly bore the judgment sinners deserved.</p>

<p>Jesus was not punished for His own wrongdoing. He suffered in our place. His resurrection showed that His sacrifice was accepted and that sin and death had been defeated.</p>

<p>Through the cross, God remains just while declaring believers righteous.</p>

<p>God’s justice and love meet at the cross: sin is judged, and sinners are welcomed.</p>

<h2>Christ’s Righteousness Is Counted as Ours</h2>

<p>Justification includes both the removal of guilt and the gift of a new standing before God.</p>

<p>Our sin was counted to Christ, and His righteousness is counted to everyone who believes.</p>

<p>Christians do not immediately become perfect in their daily lives. God continues changing us. Yet our standing before Him is settled when we trust in Christ.</p>

<p>Our acceptance is stronger than our performance. Our obedience may be inconsistent, but Christ’s obedience was complete. Our faith may feel weak, but the Savior we trust is strong.</p>

<h2>Received Through Faith</h2>

<p>We are justified through faith, not through good works.</p>

<p>Faith is not another way to prove our worth. It is the empty hand that receives what Christ has accomplished.</p>

<p>To believe in Jesus is to stop relying on our own goodness and confess, “I cannot make myself right with God. Jesus is my only hope.”</p>

<p>We are not justified because our faith is unusually strong. We are justified because our faith rests on Jesus. A trembling hand can still receive a precious gift, and weak faith can receive a strong Savior.</p>

<h2>Peace with God</h2>

<p>Justification changes our relationship with God.</p>

<p>Peace with God is more than a peaceful feeling. It means the hostility caused by sin has been removed, and we are no longer condemned.</p>

  “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

<p>Our feelings may change, but God’s verdict does not.</p>

<p>When our conscience accuses us, we should not excuse our sin. We should confess it and look again to Christ. We do not need to punish ourselves until we feel worthy. Jesus has already borne our punishment, and His righteousness is enough.</p>

<h2>Grace Leads to Obedience</h2>

<p>Justification does not make obedience unimportant. It gives obedience a new foundation.</p>

<p>We do not obey so that God will declare us righteous. We obey because He already has. We do not pursue holiness to earn His love, but because His love has been freely given.</p>

<p>Grace removes both pride and despair. We cannot boast because righteousness is a gift, and we do not need to despair because our failures are not greater than Christ’s saving work.</p>

<p>Understanding justification helps us confess sin, forgive others, serve without seeking praise, and obey with gratitude.</p>

<p>Our confidence is not, “I have lived well enough.”</p>

<p>Our confidence is, “Jesus Christ is righteous, He died for me, and by grace I belong to Him.”</p>

<h2>What We Have Learned</h2>

  <li>Every person is guilty before God and cannot earn a righteous standing through good works.</li>
  <li>Jesus lived in perfect righteousness and bore the judgment of sinners on the cross.</li>
  <li>God counts Christ’s righteousness to everyone who trusts in Him.</li>
  <li>We are justified by grace through faith, not by personal merit or religious performance.</li>
  <li>Because we are justified, we have peace with God and are no longer condemned.</li>
  <li>God’s grace produces grateful, humble, and joyful obedience.</li>

<h2>What We Are Called to Do</h2>

<ol>
  <li>Stop relying on personal goodness for acceptance with God.</li>
  <li>Trust completely in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.</li>
  <li>Confess sin honestly while resting in Christ’s finished work.</li>
  <li>Reject both pride in success and despair over failure.</li>
  <li>Thank God for the righteousness He freely gives in Christ.</li>
  <li>Obey God from gratitude and love rather than trying to earn His acceptance.</li>
