<p class="lead">Jesus called loving God the greatest commandment: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30).</p>

<p>That command can feel overwhelming. How can we produce wholehearted love for the God we cannot see? What should we do when our affection feels weak, distracted, or inconsistent?</p>

<p>Scripture does not answer by telling us to manufacture religious emotion. Love for God grows as we receive His love, see His worth, trust His promises, and respond with the whole of life. We learn to love because He loved us first.</p>

<h2>His Love Comes First</h2>

<p>"We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). Christian love begins with God's action, not ours.</p>

<p>God did not wait for us to become lovable. "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). At the cross, Jesus bore our guilt and gave Himself to bring us to God. His love is holy, costly, and undeserved.</p>

<p>If we begin only with the command to love, we may try to prove ourselves through intense feelings or impressive service. But when we begin with the gospel, love becomes a response of gratitude and trust. We do not love God to persuade Him to accept us. In Christ, we are accepted and therefore learn to love Him.</p>

<p>Return often to what God has done. Remember the patience that led you to repentance, the Son who gave Himself for you, the Spirit who made you alive, and the promises that hold your future. The heart is warmed by grace it actually sees.</p>

<h2>Love Sees God as Worthy</h2>

<p>We cannot deeply love someone we barely know. God has made Himself known in creation, in Scripture, and supremely in Jesus Christ.</p>

<p>Moses asked to see God's glory, and God revealed His name and character: "merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness," yet perfectly just (Exodus 34:6-7). God's qualities are not separate pieces. His love is holy, His power is wise, His justice is good, and His mercy is truthful.</p>

<p>Jesus makes the Father known. He said, "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father" (John 14:9). Watch Jesus welcome sinners, confront hypocrisy, touch the unclean, speak truth, obey the Father, endure the cross, and rise in victory. In Him we see what God is like.</p>

<p>Love grows through attention. When Scripture reveals God's character, pause instead of rushing on. Praise Him for the particular truth you see. Ask how that truth corrects false ideas about Him. The goal of Bible reading is not merely gathering information; it is knowing and delighting in the living God.</p>

<h2>Love Involves the Whole Person</h2>

<p>Jesus speaks of heart, soul, mind, and strength. He does not divide human life into isolated compartments. He calls us to love God with everything we are.</p>

<p>Love includes affection: joy in God's beauty, grief over what dishonors Him, and desire for His presence. It includes the mind: believing truth, remembering His works, and rejecting distorted pictures of Him. It includes the will: choosing His ways when obedience costs us. It includes strength: offering our bodies, time, energy, and possessions.</p>

<p>Feelings matter, but feelings alone are not the measure of love. A person may feel stirred during worship and then ignore God's commands. Another believer may feel emotionally tired yet quietly obey, pray, and remain faithful. The second may be expressing deeper love.</p>

<p>Neither should we make emotional dullness an ideal. The Psalms openly desire, rejoice in, and thirst for God. Ask Him to awaken genuine affection. Then continue loving Him through truth and obedience while you wait for feelings to follow.</p>

<h2>Obedience Is Love Taking Shape</h2>

<p>Jesus said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments" (John 14:15). Obedience does not purchase His love; it gives visible expression to ours.</p>

<p>God's commands show us what pleases Him and what love looks like in practice. We love Him when we tell the truth, refuse sexual immorality, forgive, care for the poor, honor our commitments, and turn from secret sin because His will matters to us.</p>

<p>Obedience must remain personal. Christianity is not loyalty to abstract rules but trust in the Lord who speaks. Like Jesus, we learn to say, "Not my will, but yours, be done" (Luke 22:42).</p>

<p>When we disobey, love returns through repentance rather than hiding. Peter denied Jesus, but the risen Christ restored him and asked, "Do you love me?" (John 21:15-17). Failure is serious, yet it need not be the end of love. Confess, receive mercy, and take the next obedient step.</p>

<h2>Ordinary Practices Train Our Attention</h2>

<p>Love often grows through repeated habits rather than rare spiritual moments. Scripture, prayer, worship, the Lord's Supper, fellowship, generosity, and rest direct our attention toward God.</p>

<p>These practices cannot force God to bless us or make Him indebted to us. They place us where His truth is heard, His goodness is remembered, and our distracted hearts are redirected.</p>

<p>Read Scripture with the question, "What does this show me about God?" Pray with honesty rather than performing. Sing even when your voice is ordinary. Gather with the church when isolation feels easier. Give thanks for specific gifts. Turn routine work into service offered to Him.</p>

<p>Consistency matters more than creating an impressive schedule. Ten attentive minutes may be more useful than an hour spent pretending. Begin with a sustainable rhythm, remove obvious distractions, and ask another believer to help you continue.</p>

<h2>Rival Loves Must Be Brought into the Light</h2>

<p>The heart continually attaches itself to created things. Money, comfort, romance, success, influence, entertainment, family, or even ministry can become more precious to us than God.</p>

<p>Created gifts are not evil. Idolatry begins when we ask them to provide the identity, security, control, or joy that belongs finally to God. A rival love is often exposed when we cannot imagine obeying God if it means losing something.</p>

<p>Jesus warned, "You cannot serve God and money" (Matthew 6:24). The issue is not simply what we possess, but what possesses us.</p>

<p>Ask what occupies your imagination, controls your decisions, and produces your deepest fear or anger when threatened. Name that rival honestly. Repent not only of outward behavior but of treating a gift as a god. Then practice enjoying the gift with open hands or surrendering it when faithfulness requires.</p>

<p>God does not remove idols merely by making life empty. He reveals Himself as the better treasure. The psalmist could say, "Whom have I in heaven but you?" because God's presence was the strength of his heart and portion forever (Psalm 73:25-26).</p>

<h2>Love for God Appears in Love for People</h2>

<p>It is possible to speak passionately about loving God while treating people harshly. John does not allow that separation: "He who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen" (1 John 4:20).</p>

<p>God's image-bearers matter to Him, and believers are His children. Love for the Father changes how we speak to family, respond to difficult church members, conduct business, notice the overlooked, and forgive those who hurt us.</p>

<p>This does not mean approving sin or remaining in danger. Biblical love can confront evil, establish boundaries, and seek justice. But even necessary firmness should not be driven by contempt or revenge.</p>

<p>Jesus connected love for Him with caring for His people. Ordinary acts of feeding, welcoming, clothing, visiting, and compassion are received as service to Him (Matthew 25:35-40). We often discover that love for God deepens as we obey Him by loving someone inconvenient.</p>

<h2>Love Trusts God in Seasons of Pain</h2>

<p>Suffering can make God's love difficult to feel. Prayers appear unanswered, losses accumulate, and the heart wonders why a loving Father allows pain.</p>

<p>Scripture makes room for lament. The Psalms ask "How long?" and speak honestly about confusion. Love does not require pretending that grief is easy. Bring God your questions rather than withdrawing into silence.</p>

<p>At the cross, we see that suffering is not proof of God's absence or indifference. The beloved Son suffered, and through that suffering God accomplished salvation. The cross does not explain every particular sorrow, but it establishes God's love beyond dispute.</p>

<p>Keep trusting what He has revealed when you cannot understand what He has permitted. Let other believers carry faith with you. Sometimes love looks like holding one promise through tears: nothing can separate those in Christ from the love of God (Romans 8:35-39).</p>

<h2>Love Grows toward Joyful Communion</h2>

<p>No Christian loves God perfectly in this life. Our attention wanders, motives mix, and rival loves return. Yet the Spirit produces love as His fruit (Galatians 5:22), and God patiently forms what He commands.</p>

<p>Do not measure growth only by emotional intensity. Look for increasing trust, quicker repentance, deeper gratitude, greater obedience, and a growing desire to please Him. These are signs that love is taking root.</p>

<p>One day faith will become sight. God's servants "will see his face" (Revelation 22:4). Every partial glimpse, trembling prayer, and costly act of obedience is moving toward unhindered communion with Him.</p>

<p>Until then, keep looking to Christ. Receive the Father's love again. Ask the Spirit to enlarge your heart. The God who first loved you is able to teach you to love Him with the whole of your life.</p>

  <li>Express love for Christ through one act of obedience or practical care for another person this week.</li>
  <li>Continue seeking God in seasons of weak feeling or pain, trusting His revealed love while asking the Spirit to deepen your affection.</li>
