<p class="lead">When you first trust Christ, God truly makes you new. Yet you may soon discover that old habits, fears, and selfish desires have not vanished. That can be confusing. If God has changed me, why do I still need so much change?</p>

<p>The Bible answers by showing us both a decisive beginning and a lifelong process. God gives new life, a new standing, and His own Spirit at conversion. Then He patiently shapes His children to become more like Jesus. Christians often call this ongoing work sanctification, which means being set apart for God and increasingly formed in holiness.</p>

<h2>Change Begins with God's Gift of New Life</h2>

<p>Christian growth does not begin with repairing the old self through greater determination. It begins with God giving life where there was spiritual death.</p>

  Jesus told Nicodemus, "Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God"

<p>We cannot cause our own spiritual birth any more than we caused our physical birth. God acts by His Spirit, enabling us to see Christ, repent, believe, and live.</p>

  This fulfills God's promise: "I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you"

<p>Salvation reaches deeper than improved behavior. God changes our relationship to Him and places new desires within us.</p>

<p>The change is real even when it is not yet complete. Second Corinthians 5:17 says that anyone in Christ is a new creation. A believer is no longer under sin's condemnation or rule, yet still awaits the day when every trace of sin will be gone. You are genuinely new, and God is still renewing you.</p>

<h2>The Holy Spirit Works from the Inside Out</h2>

<p>Rules can restrain behavior for a time, but they cannot by themselves create love for God. Lasting transformation requires the Holy Spirit.</p>

<p>He helps us understand God's Word, exposes what is sinful, assures us that we are God's children, and gives power to put sin to death
  <span class="ref">— Romans 8:13-16</span>. He is not an impersonal influence. He is God present with and within His people.</p>

  Galatians 5 describes the Spirit's transforming work as fruit: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control"

<p>Fruit grows from life within. It may develop gradually, but it reveals the kind of life producing it.</p>

<p>This means Christian change is more than becoming disciplined, polite, or successful. A person can appear controlled while remaining proud, resentful, or hungry for praise. The Spirit reaches motives. He teaches us to love when no one notices, forgive when pride wants revenge, and obey because Christ is worthy.</p>

<h2>God Shows You Christ and Reshapes Your Desires</h2>

<p>We become like what we admire. Sin captures the heart by making created things appear more desirable than God. Transformation includes learning to see the beauty and worth of Jesus more clearly.</p>

<p>The Spirit changes us as we see Christ in the gospel and respond to Him with faith.</p>

<p>Consider His compassion toward the weak, His courage before opposition, His purity in temptation, His humility in service, and His sacrificial love at the cross. We do not look at Jesus merely to copy an inspiring example. We look to the risen Lord who has saved us and whose Spirit now forms His character in us.</p>

<p>Over time, God also changes what we want. You may still feel temptation, but begin to grieve what once seemed harmless. You may discover a new desire to pray, make peace, give generously, or understand Scripture. Do not dismiss these beginnings. They are signs that God is at work beneath the surface.</p>

<h2>You Participate without Becoming Your Own Savior</h2>

<p>God's work does not make believers passive. Scripture tells us to pursue holiness, resist sin, practice love, and train ourselves for godliness. At the same time, our effort depends completely on grace.</p>

  Paul describes this partnership carefully: "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure"

<p>We work because God is working in us. We do not create the power; we act with the power He supplies.</p>

<p>This is different from self-salvation. Self-salvation says, "If I perform well enough, God will accept me." Grace says, "God has accepted me through Christ, so I can now pursue what pleases Him." One produces pride or despair. The other produces dependent effort and gratitude.</p>

<p>When you face a sinful habit, pray and plan. Ask the Spirit for strength, identify what feeds the pattern, remove easy access to temptation, replace the old behavior with what is good, and invite another believer to help. Trusting God and taking practical action belong together.</p>

<h2>God Uses Ordinary Means to Produce Deep Change</h2>

<p>We often want one dramatic experience to fix everything. God can work suddenly, but He ordinarily shapes His people through steady gifts sometimes called means of grace.</p>

<p>Through Scripture, God renews our understanding and corrects false beliefs. Through prayer, we express dependence and bring desires under His rule. Through worship and the Lord's Supper, the church remembers the gospel together. Through Christian fellowship, we receive encouragement, correction, examples, and opportunities to love.</p>

<p>These practices do not earn spiritual power like wages. They place us where God has promised to meet and nourish His people. A plant does not earn growth by receiving sunlight and water, but it will not flourish by refusing them.</p>

<p>God also uses responsibilities, interruptions, and trials. A difficult relationship may expose impatience we did not know was present. A season of waiting may train endurance. Service may uncover selfish ambition and teach humility.</p>

<p>The hardship itself is not always good, and we should never call evil good. Yet God is wise enough to use even what He hates to form what He loves in His children.</p>

<h2>Growth Is Often Gradual and Uneven</h2>

<p>Jesus compared God's kingdom to seed growing in the ground. The farmer sleeps and rises, and the seed sprouts and grows "he knows not how"</p>

<p>Much of God's transforming work is quiet before it becomes visible.</p>

<p>You may grow rapidly in one area and struggle for years in another. Fresh understanding can expose sins you previously ignored, making you feel worse when you are actually seeing more clearly. Progress can include quicker confession, greater hatred of sin, a willingness to seek help, and returning to Christ sooner after failure.</p>

<p>Do not compare your pace with another person's. God deals personally with His children. Instead, look over months and years for the Spirit's fruit. Are you becoming more teachable? More ready to forgive? More truthful when honesty costs you? More dependent on Christ?</p>

<p>Slow growth should not become an excuse for passivity. It should lead to patient faithfulness. Keep using the means God gives, and take serious action against sin. The Gardener is patient, but He intends fruit.</p>

<h2>God Will Finish What He Started</h2>

<p>Your hope for change is ultimately God's faithfulness.</p>

<p>That promise does not mean every week will feel successful. It means God has not abandoned His purpose. He chose His people to be conformed to the image of His Son</p>

<p>Christ died not only to forgive us but to make us His own, and the Spirit will continue His work until faith becomes sight.</p>

<p>When progress encourages you, thank God rather than taking the credit. When failure discourages you, repent and return rather than giving up. The same Savior who justified you is committed to sanctifying you. One day, when Christ appears, we will be like Him because we will see Him as He is</p>

<h2>What We Have Learned</h2>

  <li>God begins Christian change by giving new birth, a new heart, and a new relationship to sin.</li>
  <li>The Holy Spirit works within believers to reshape motives, desires, character, and behavior.</li>
  <li>We participate through dependent effort because God is already working in us.</li>
  <li>Scripture, prayer, the church, ordinary responsibilities, and trials are means God uses to mature His people.</li>
  <li>Growth is often gradual and uneven, but God has promised to complete His work and make His children like Christ.</li>
</ol>

<h2>What We Are Called to Do</h2>

<ul>
  <li>Thank God for the real new life He has already given rather than judging everything by unfinished growth.</li>
  <li>Look regularly at Christ in Scripture and ask the Spirit to form His character in you.</li>
  <li>Combine prayerful dependence with a specific plan for the sinful pattern or immature response you need to address.</li>
  <li>Receive God's ordinary means of grace through Scripture, prayer, worship, fellowship, and the Lord's Supper.</li>
  <li>Measure growth patiently over time, repent when you fail, and trust God to finish what He began.</li>
