The gospel concerns our bodies as well as our souls. God created us as embodied people, the Son took a human body, the Holy Spirit dwells in believers, and Christ will raise our bodies from death.

This gives the body dignity and purpose. It also means sexuality is not a private territory separated from discipleship. Jesus is Lord of our desires, relationships, choices, and physical lives.

Christian sexual ethics can sound only restrictive when separated from God's larger story. Scripture places its commands within creation, covenant love, redemption, and future resurrection. God calls us to holiness because our bodies matter to Him.

Your Body Was Created Good

After creating humanity as male and female in His image, God called His creation "very good" (
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.
— Genesis 1:27, 31
). The body is not a prison or an embarrassing part of us. It is part of God's good design.

Sin has affected bodily desires and relationships through shame, confusion, disordered desire, exploitation, and death. But sin does not erase the body's created worth.

Jesus confirms that worth by taking flesh. He ate, rested, touched the sick, suffered, died, and rose bodily. The Christian hope is not escape from embodiment but "the redemption of our bodies" (
...waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
— Romans 8:23
).

Treat your body and other people's bodies as belonging to God's good creation. Neither worship the body nor despise it. Receive it as a life entrusted to you for His glory.

Your Body Belongs to the Lord

Paul confronted sexual immorality by reminding believers of their new belonging: "The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body" (
...The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
— 1 Corinthians 6:13
).

He continues, "You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body" (
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
— 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
). Christ's ownership is not the possession of a cruel master. He bought us by giving His own body and blood to rescue us.

Our culture often treats bodily autonomy as the final authority: if desire is sincere and consent exists, the choice must be right. Consent is morally necessary, and violating it is grievously wrong, but Christian wisdom asks more. Does this choice honor God, agree with His design, love the other person truly, and treat both bodies as belonging to Christ?

Freedom is not the ability to obey every desire. It is the Spirit-given ability to offer ourselves to God.

Sex Is a Good Gift within God's Covenant

Scripture presents sexual union as God's gift within marriage between a man and a woman. In creation, a man and woman are joined as "one flesh" (
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
— Genesis 2:24
), a pattern Jesus affirms (
He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?"
— Matthew 19:4-6
).

Marriage joins public covenant, faithful love, and bodily union. Sex is therefore more than recreation or private expression; it speaks the language of exclusive, enduring self-giving.

Within marriage, sexual love should be faithful, mutual, tender, and free from coercion. Husband and wife owe one another honor and care, not selfish demand (
The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.
— 1 Corinthians 7:3-5
;
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way... showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel...
— 1 Peter 3:7
). Marriage does not create entitlement to abuse or forced sexual activity.

"Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled" (
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
— Hebrews 13:4
). God's boundaries protect the truth that sexual union is covenantal, embodied self-giving.

Singleness Is a Full Christian Life

The church must never speak as though marriage completes a person. Jesus was single, fully human, and perfectly fulfilled in His Father's will. Paul called singleness a gift that can create distinctive freedom for service to the Lord (
I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another... I want you to be free from anxieties.
— 1 Corinthians 7:7, 32-35
).

Single Christians may experience loneliness, unfulfilled desire, or exclusion. The church should become genuine family, not a gathering organized mainly around couples and children.

Chastity is not a waiting room before real life begins. It is the faithful ordering of sexuality in every season. Married believers practice it through exclusive faithfulness; unmarried believers practice it through abstaining from sexual activity.

Neither status guarantees holiness. Marriage does not cure lust or selfishness, and singleness does not make someone less mature. In Christ, both married and single believers are complete members of God's family.

Desires Are Real but Not Final Authorities

Sexual desires can be powerful, persistent, and deeply connected to how people understand themselves. Scripture does not tell us to deny that reality. It does teach that every desire must be brought under Christ's lordship.

Temptation itself is not identical to sin. Jesus was tempted yet without sin (
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
— Hebrews 4:15
). A believer may experience unwanted desires, including same-sex attraction or other patterns not chosen by conscious decision, without being guilty merely because the temptation is present.

Sin involves welcoming, cultivating, or acting on desire against God's will. This principle applies to every person. Heterosexual desire is not automatically pure; it can become lust, adultery, fantasy, manipulation, or exploitation.

Our deepest identity is received from union with Christ. Desires influence experience, but they do not name us finally. Every Christian learns to say, "This desire is real, but Jesus is Lord."

Sexual Holiness Begins in the Heart

Jesus teaches that adultery can begin with a look that intentionally cultivates lust (
You have heard that it was said, "You shall not commit adultery." But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
— Matthew 5:27-28
). Sexual integrity is not only avoiding physical acts while feeding fantasy in secret.

Lust turns a person into an object for imagined use. Love sees a whole image-bearer with a story, relationships, dignity, and eternal significance.

Pornography trains the mind toward consumption, secrecy, and novelty. It separates sexual pleasure from covenant love and may conceal coercion or exploitation. Christ calls us to turn from it, not manage it more discreetly.

Pay attention to the paths that lead your heart. Entertainment, social media, private messaging, emotional dependency, and flirtation can awaken or feed desire long before a physical boundary is crossed.

Holiness is not fear of bodies. It is learning to see people with purity and to direct desire according to love.

Flee and Pursue

Paul does not say to negotiate with sexual immorality. He says, "Flee" (
Flee from sexual immorality.
— 1 Corinthians 6:18
). Joseph ran from a situation where continued presence would have strengthened temptation (
But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Behold, because of me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge. He is not greater in this house than I am. How then could I do this great wickedness and sin against God?"
— Genesis 39:7-12
).

Wise boundaries are concrete. They may include ending secret communication, avoiding being alone in certain settings, using device filters, removing an app, changing travel arrangements, limiting alcohol, or asking a mature believer for regular accountability.

Do not design boundaries mainly to preserve the appearance of innocence while approaching sin as closely as possible. Ask what helps you love Christ and the other person genuinely.

Fleeing is only half the movement. Paul tells Timothy to "flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace" with other believers (
So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
— 2 Timothy 2:22
). Fill life with worship, service, friendship, meaningful work, physical care, and honest community. Empty isolation makes temptation louder.

Refuse Secrecy and Return to Grace

Sexual sin thrives in secrecy because shame says, "If anyone knows, you will be rejected." The gospel says that Christ already knows and invites sinners into cleansing.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
— 1 John 1:9
). Confession names sin without excuses and turns toward God.

Tell an appropriate, trustworthy believer. You may need a pastor, mature mentor, counselor, support group, or specialized treatment. If someone has been harmed, repentance includes truth, protection, accountability, and possible repair.

Do not confuse forgiveness with immediate restoration to a role or relationship. Consequences may remain, trust may need rebuilding, and some boundaries may become permanent. Grace opposes condemnation, not truth.

Repeated failure should not produce casual surrender. Examine the pattern, strengthen safeguards, involve others more fully, and keep returning to Christ. His mercy is not permission to sin; it is power to rise and walk again.

Abuse Is the Sin of the Abuser

Sexual abuse, assault, coercion, harassment, exploitation, and grooming are not the victim's sexual sin. Responsibility belongs to the person who chose to violate another.

A victim's involuntary bodily response, fear, freezing, confusion, or delayed disclosure does not create consent or guilt. Shame often attaches to the wounded person, but Christ does not place the offender's sin upon the victim.

If you are in danger, seek safety. Contact appropriate civil authorities, medical care, qualified counselors, and trustworthy advocates. Churches should report as required, preserve evidence, protect vulnerable people, and never pressure someone into private confrontation with an alleged abuser.

Healing may involve grief, trauma-informed care, patient community, and slow recovery of trust. God's holiness includes justice for the oppressed and tender care for the wounded.

Honor Others as Brothers and Sisters

Paul tells Timothy to relate to younger women "as sisters, in all purity" and to older believers as fathers and mothers (
Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.
— 1 Timothy 5:1-2
). This family vision helps reshape relationships.

Do not make people wonder whether kindness always carries sexual expectation. Respect clear communication and boundaries. Refuse suggestive jokes, unwanted touch, manipulation, and pressure. Receive another person's no without punishment or persistence.

Dating should involve honest intentions and respect for the other person's faith, body, time, and community. Christian courtship is not ownership; until marriage, the other person is not your spouse.

Within marriage, continue honoring rather than using one another. Listen, communicate, seek mutual good, and ask for help when conflict, pain, trauma, or sexual difficulty creates distance.

Purity is not merely what we avoid. It is a way of seeing and treating people with the dignity Christ gives them.

Await the Resurrection

Our bodies are marked by weakness, aging, unfulfilled longing, and death. They are also destined for resurrection. "God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power" (
And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.
— 1 Corinthians 6:14
).

Future hope gives present choices meaning. What we do with the body matters because the body is for the Lord. No sacrifice made in faithfulness will be forgotten, and no holy longing will finally end in emptiness.

Jesus promises a kingdom where marriage as we know it gives way to a greater communion with God and His people (
For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
— Matthew 22:30
). Human sexuality is a good but temporary sign; union with Christ is the lasting reality.

Offer your body to the Lord who created, purchased, indwells, and will raise it. His commands are not contempt for your humanity. They are the wisdom of the Savior who is restoring it.
