<p class="lead">Grace is God's undeserved kindness toward sinners. We are saved by grace, forgiven by grace, and welcomed into God's family by grace. But grace does more than cancel our guilt. It also begins to change the way we live.</p>

<p>Some people fear that emphasizing grace will make obedience seem unimportant. Others treat obedience as though it earns God's acceptance. The gospel rejects both errors. We do not obey in order to make God save us. Because God has saved us in Christ, His grace teaches us to leave sin and live for Him.</p>

<h2>The Grace That Saves Also Trains</h2>

<p>Grace has appeared in the coming of Jesus. He gave Himself to redeem us from lawlessness and to make a people who are eager to do what is good (Titus 2:13-14). His saving work is the source of our new life, and His grace becomes our teacher.</p>

<p>This training includes both a no and a yes. We learn to say no to desires and habits that oppose God. We learn to say yes to self-control, justice, love, and devotion to Him. Grace does not merely tell us that the past is forgiven; it leads us into a different future.</p>

<p>Training also implies a process. A student does not master every lesson immediately. God is patient with His children, yet His patience has a purpose. He is not leaving us as we were. He is teaching us to walk in the freedom Christ purchased.</p>

<h2>Obedience Is the Fruit, Not the Price</h2>

<p>No act of obedience can erase our guilt or place God in our debt. Jesus alone has accomplished what is needed for our acceptance.</p>

<p>Good works are not the root of salvation; they are its fruit. They do not purchase new life; they grow from new life.</p>

<p>This order protects us from pride when we are doing well and despair when we fail. We cannot boast as though our obedience made us worthy. We also do not need to conclude that one failure has destroyed Christ's finished work. We return to Him, receive mercy, and continue in the good path He has prepared.</p>

<p>Imagine a child who is adopted into a loving family. The child does not obey in order to earn adoption. The new relationship comes first. Over time, the security and instruction of the home reshape how the child lives. In a greater way, believers learn obedience as people who have already been received through Christ.</p>

<h2>Grace Changes Who Rules Us</h2>

<p>Sin promises freedom but produces slavery. It trains desires to demand immediate satisfaction and teaches the heart to resist God's authority. Grace brings us under a better rule.</p>

<p>Through union with Christ, believers have entered a new relationship to sin. It may tempt us, but it is no longer our rightful master.</p>

<p>Being under grace does not mean living without a Lord. It means sin's reign has been broken and we now belong to God.</p>

<p>When temptation comes, you can remember more than a rule. You can remember your new allegiance: "I belong to Jesus. This sin is not my master. Christ has given me a better way." Obedience becomes a response to rescue.</p>

<h2>Love Listens to the Lord</h2>

<p>He was not describing a bargain in which obedience buys His love. He was showing that love for Him takes His words seriously.</p>

<p>We cannot separate trust in Jesus from willingness to follow Him. He is not only a helper for emergencies or a source of comforting ideas. He is the risen Lord who has all authority. His commands express His holy and wise character.</p>

<p>Obedience does not mean we always understand immediately. A child may not grasp every reason for a parent's instruction, and Christians will sometimes find Christ's way costly or contrary to the surrounding culture. Faith says that the One who died for us is trustworthy enough to lead us.</p>

<p>His commands are also aimed at love. Jesus summarized God's law as loving God with our whole being and loving our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40). Biblical obedience is not cold rule keeping. It is learning to love what God loves and to seek another person's true good.</p>

<h2>The Spirit Supplies What God Commands</h2>

<p>Grace does not hand us a list and leave us alone. God gives the Holy Spirit to dwell in every believer. The Spirit opens our understanding, produces new desires, exposes sin, and grows Christlike character.</p>

<p>What God commands, He also works in His people. This does not make our choices unnecessary. It means our obedience is never an independent achievement.</p>

<p>We act, and beneath our action God is at work giving desire and strength.</p>

<p>Begin obedience with dependence: "Holy Spirit, show me what honors Christ. Give me power to say no to sin and yes to what is good." Then take the concrete step in front of you. Dependence is not passivity. It is active obedience that knows where its power comes from.</p>

<h2>Let Grace Train You in Ordinary Choices</h2>

<p>Spiritual growth is often formed through small decisions repeated over time. Grace trains us in conversations, purchases, private thoughts, work habits, relationships, and the use of our bodies.</p>

<p>When Scripture exposes a pattern, make the response specific. Replace falsehood with truth. Replace taking with honest work and generosity. Replace corrupt speech with words that build others up (Ephesians 4:25-29). God's instruction often includes not only what to stop but what loving behavior should take its place.</p>

<p>Use the means God provides. Read Scripture to learn His ways. Pray before and during temptation. Remove access to predictable sources of sin. Ask mature believers for encouragement and accountability. Participate in the church, where obedience is taught, practiced, corrected, and restored in community.</p>

<p>Do not wait for obedience to feel effortless. Training can be uncomfortable because old desires resist change. Each faithful choice is an opportunity to trust that God's way is better.</p>

<h2>Correction Is Also a Gift of Grace</h2>

<p>God's grace comforts, but it also corrects. A loving Father does not ignore what harms His children. Hebrews 12 explains that the Lord disciplines those He loves so that they may share His holiness.</p>

<p>Correction may come through Scripture, conscience, consequences, or a fellow believer who speaks truth with gentleness. Our first impulse may be to defend ourselves. Grace teaches us to listen, test what is said by God's Word, confess what is true, and change direction.</p>

<p>When you fail, do not turn obedience into self-punishment. Bring the sin into the light. Trust Christ's sacrifice, receive forgiveness, and ask what a faithful next step looks like. The same grace that exposes sin also welcomes returning sinners.</p>

<p>We will not reach sinless perfection in this life, but genuine grace does not leave us at peace with disobedience. It creates a growing desire to please Christ and a pattern of returning when we wander. Our hope remains Jesus from beginning to end.</p>

  <li>Identify one area where grace is teaching you to say no to sin and yes to a specific act of love.</li>
  <li>Ask the Holy Spirit for both the desire and strength to obey, then take the next concrete step.</li>
  <li>Receive biblical correction humbly and test it by God's Word rather than responding defensively.</li>
  <li>When you fail, confess quickly, receive mercy, and continue walking under the patient training of grace.</li>
