<p class="lead">Work and money occupy much of ordinary life. They can become sources of purpose, anxiety, conflict, pride, generosity, exploitation, or service. Scripture speaks to them not as separate from discipleship but as important places where we worship God and love our neighbor.</p>

<p>The central word is stewardship. Our abilities, opportunities, possessions, time, and money are entrusted to us by God. We are managers, not ultimate owners. Stewardship asks, "How can I use what God has placed in my hands for His purposes?"</p>

<h2>Work Belongs to God's Good Creation</h2>

<p>Before sin entered the world, God placed the man in the garden "to work it and keep it" (Genesis 2:15). Work is not a punishment. It belongs to the dignity of bearing God's image.</p>

<p>Through work, people cultivate creation, meet needs, solve problems, care for others, and create beauty. Paid employment is one form; caregiving, study, household labor, volunteering, and community service also matter.</p>

<p>The fall made work painful. Thorns, frustration, injustice, exhaustion, unemployment, dangerous conditions, and conflict now mark it (Genesis 3:17-19). A good task can still feel empty, and a necessary job may not fit our gifts.</p>

<p>Do not confuse work's difficulty with its worthlessness. God can receive imperfect labor offered faithfully in a broken world.</p>

<h2>Work for the Lord in Every Honest Calling</h2>

<p>Paul tells servants in the ancient world to work sincerely, "as for the Lord and not for men" (Colossians 3:23). The principle reaches every honest task: Christ is the highest One we serve.</p>

<p>This changes motivation when supervisors are absent, customers are ungrateful, or the work feels unnoticed. We pursue quality, honesty, reliability, and care because our labor is seen by God.</p>

<p>Lawful work can serve real needs regardless of social status. Scripture does not divide life into sacred church work and meaningless ordinary work. Repairing a pipe, teaching a child, preparing food, or designing a system can become neighbor love.</p>

<p>Some work, however, depends on deception, exploitation, sexual immorality, violence outside rightful authority, or goods and services that seriously harm people. Following Christ may require refusing a task, challenging a practice, or leaving an occupation when participation cannot be made faithful.</p>

<h2>Your Job Is Not Your Identity</h2>

<p>Work can become an idol when achievement tells us who we are. Titles, income, productivity, and praise begin to function as a verdict on personal worth.</p>

<p>This makes success dangerous and failure devastating. We may sacrifice health, worship, family, integrity, and compassion to keep proving ourselves.</p>

<p>In Christ, identity is received before it is achieved. You are God's child by grace, not by career performance. A promotion cannot make you more accepted by the Father, and unemployment cannot remove you from His family.</p>

<p>That security frees you to work diligently without demanding that work save you. It also gives dignity in seasons when illness, caregiving, disability, age, or lack of opportunity limits paid employment.</p>

<p>Ask what work has become in your heart: a way to serve, or a way to establish that you matter.</p>

<h2>Money Is a Tool and a Spiritual Test</h2>

<p>Money can provide food, shelter, health care, education, generosity, and the means to support useful work. Scripture does not say money itself is evil. It warns that "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils" (1 Timothy 6:10).</p>

<p>Money promises security, freedom, status, and control. Because those desires reach the heart, Jesus spoke often about possessions. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21).</p>

<p>Our spending reveals what we value, but financial circumstances are not simple measures of spiritual health. Wealth may come through diligence, inheritance, opportunity, injustice, or many factors. Poverty may result from oppression, disaster, illness, low wages, personal choices, or conditions beyond a person's control.</p>

<p>Do not preach prosperity as proof of faith or treat hardship as proof of failure. God calls both rich and poor to trust Him and calls His people to practice justice and mutual care.</p>

<h2>Learn Contentment and Resist Greed</h2>

<p>Paul learned to face abundance and need through the strength of Christ (Philippians 4:11-13). Contentment is not pretending needs do not matter. It is freedom from the belief that more possessions are necessary for a meaningful life.</p>

<p>Greed continually moves the line of enough. Comparison turns another person's blessing into evidence of our deprivation. Advertising can train desire by making ordinary life feel inadequate.</p>

<p>Practice gratitude for specific provision. Distinguish needs from wants without condemning every enjoyment. God "richly provides us with everything to enjoy," while commanding generosity and readiness to share (1 Timothy 6:17-19).</p>

<p>Contentment can coexist with seeking better work, fair wages, safe housing, or relief from poverty. It refuses dishonest or destructive methods and entrusts the outcome to God.</p>

<h2>Plan with Honest Numbers</h2>

<p>Jesus commended counting the cost before beginning a project (Luke 14:28). Financial planning is a form of truthful stewardship.</p>

<p>A budget is simply a written plan for income and spending. Record what actually comes in, list fixed obligations and ordinary expenses, and compare the total. Tracking reveals where money is going and helps choices reflect real priorities rather than guesses.</p>

<p>Begin with essentials and rightful obligations. Make room, as circumstances allow, for generosity, savings, and reasonable enjoyment. Review the plan regularly because income, needs, and prices change.</p>

<p>A budget should serve people rather than become a tool of control. Married couples should practice honesty and shared responsibility. Families with limited income may have little to rearrange; records cannot create money that is not there.</p>

<p>When the numbers do not work, seek help early. A trustworthy adviser, nonprofit credit counselor, church benevolence ministry, or appropriate public resource may help identify options.</p>

<h2>Approach Debt with Caution and Truth</h2>

<p>Scripture recognizes borrowing but warns that "the borrower is the slave of the lender" (Proverbs 22:7). Debt creates a future obligation and reduces future freedom.</p>

<p>Not all debt is identical. But every obligation should be understood before agreement: amount borrowed, interest, fees, payment schedule, penalties, and what happens if income changes.</p>

<p>Do not borrow based on an income you merely hope to receive. Be especially cautious of pressure, promises of guaranteed return, and products whose cost is difficult to understand.</p>

<p>If debt becomes unmanageable, do not hide. Make an accurate list, stop adding avoidable debt, contact creditors before missed payments multiply, and seek reputable guidance. Avoid anyone who promises effortless escape, demands large upfront fees, or tells you to ignore lawful obligations without qualified advice.</p>

<p>Repayment matters because promises matter. Where full repayment becomes impossible, pursue truthful, lawful arrangements rather than deception or despair.</p>

<h2>Save without Making Savings Your Savior</h2>

<p>Proverbs commends the ant for preparing in season (Proverbs 6:6-8). Setting aside money for predictable needs and emergencies can reduce vulnerability and help us care for others.</p>

<p>Even a small emergency reserve may help prevent an unexpected expense from becoming costly debt. The appropriate amount depends on income, obligations, risks, and access to support. Begin with a realistic goal rather than shame over an ideal you cannot reach.</p>

<p>Saving is not unbelief. Joseph stored grain during years of abundance in preparation for famine (Genesis 41). Yet savings can become another form of self-trust. Jesus warns against the rich fool who accumulated much but was not rich toward God (Luke 12:16-21).</p>

<p>Prepare wisely while confessing that no account can guarantee life, health, or peace. Our security finally rests in the Father.</p>

<h2>Give as an Act of Grace</h2>

<p>God's generosity creates generous people. "Though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor," Paul writes of Christ (2 Corinthians 8:9).</p>

<p>Christian giving supports gospel ministry, cares for the poor, meets urgent needs, and expresses shared life in the church. It should be willing and joyful rather than manipulated, because "God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7).</p>

<p>The New Testament emphasizes generosity proportionate to what a person has. Someone with little should not be shamed by comparison with someone wealthy. Those with abundance carry greater opportunity and responsibility.</p>

<p>Plan giving so that it is not limited to occasional emotion. Also remain open to needs that interrupt the plan. Give with discernment, seeking organizations and ministries that handle resources honestly and produce good fruit.</p>

<p>Generosity includes money but extends to time, hospitality, skills, possessions, and attention.</p>

<h2>Practice Justice at Work</h2>

<p>Employers and leaders must remember that workers are people, not units of production. Scripture condemns withheld wages and exploitation (James 5:4). Pay fairly, communicate truthfully, provide safe conditions, and use authority for service.</p>

<p>Workers should give honest effort, avoid theft and deception, and respect rightful authority. They may also seek fair treatment, organize or advocate lawfully, report danger, and refuse illegal or immoral demands.</p>

<p>Customers, contractors, and businesses should use accurate weights, clear agreements, and timely payment. Christians should not exploit another person's desperation merely because a contract permits it.</p>

<p>Economic systems can be complex, and faithful believers may disagree about policy. The biblical commitments remain: tell the truth, keep promises, protect the vulnerable, reward honest labor, reject partiality, and love your neighbor.</p>

<h2>Receive Rest as Part of Stewardship</h2>

<p>God established a rhythm of work and rest. Rest reminds us that the world continues because God sustains it, not because we never stop.</p>

<p>Regular worship and rest protect people from treating productivity as lord. They also give space for relationships, delight, bodily recovery, and attention to God.</p>

<p>Some seasons make a consistent schedule difficult. Caregivers, shift workers, parents, and people holding multiple jobs may need creative patterns and help.</p>

<p>Rest is not laziness, and overwork is not always faithfulness. Stewardship includes limits. Your body, family, church, and soul are not resources to consume for income or recognition.</p>

<h2>Give an Account with Hope</h2>

<p>Jesus' parables of stewardship remind us that God will ask how His gifts were used (Matthew 25:14-30). This accountability is serious, but believers face it as servants already received by grace.</p>

<p>We will not answer for resources God never gave us. We are called to faithfulness with what is actually in our hands.</p>

<p>Make plans, work honestly, spend carefully, save wisely, give generously, rest trustfully, and repair mistakes. Hold possessions loosely, because the kingdom we receive cannot be purchased or lost in a market.</p>

<p>Our final treasure is Christ. When He is our security, work and money can return to their proper place as tools for worship and love.</p>

<li>Identify one place where greed, fear, comparison, or work-based identity is controlling you and return to Christ's sufficiency.</li>
<li>Take one responsible step toward addressing debt or building a realistic emergency reserve, seeking reputable help when needed.</li>
<li>Plan generous giving and regular rest as acts of trust rather than treating everything you possess or produce as your own.</li>
