<p class="lead">On the night before Jesus was crucified, He gave His disciples a meal to continue until He returns. With bread and the cup, the church remembers His body given and His blood poured out. Christians call this meal the Lord's Supper, Communion, or the Eucharist.</p>

<p>It is simple, but it is not empty. Jesus appointed ordinary elements to direct His people again and again to the heart of the gospel: He died for us, He has made us one people, He nourishes faith, and He is coming again.</p>

<h2>Jesus Gave the Meal on the Night He Was Betrayed</h2>

<p>The Lord's Supper began during a Passover meal. Passover remembered how God rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt through the death of a lamb and the protection of its blood (Exodus 12).</p>

<p>In that setting, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me" (Luke 22:19). He took the cup and said it was "the new covenant in my blood" (Luke 22:20).</p>

<p>Jesus placed Himself at the center of God's rescue. He is the true Passover Lamb whose sacrifice frees people from sin and judgment. His blood establishes the promised new covenant in which God forgives sin and brings His people near.</p>

<p>The church did not invent the Supper as a later memorial. It receives the meal from the Lord who gave Himself for His people.</p>

<h2>Remembering Is More Than Recalling Information</h2>

<p>When Jesus commands, "Do this in remembrance of me," He does not suggest that Christians are likely to forget the bare fact of the crucifixion. Biblical remembering brings a past act of God into the faith and obedience of the present.</p>

<p>At the Table, we remember the specific Savior who offered His body and blood. We remember that sin required His death, that He went willingly, and that His sacrifice is sufficient. We remember that our acceptance with God rests on Him rather than on the quality of the week we have had.</p>

<p>The visible signs help embodied people. We hear the promise, see the bread and cup, receive them, and taste them. God addresses not only our ideas but our whole person.</p>

<p>The Supper does not repeat Christ's sacrifice. Hebrews says He offered Himself "once for all" (Hebrews 10:10-14). The meal turns us back to that completed offering and calls us to receive its benefits by faith.</p>

<h2>The Supper Proclaims the Gospel</h2>

<p>Paul writes, "As often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes" (1 Corinthians 11:26).</p>

<p>The church preaches through the meal. The broken bread and poured cup announce that Jesus truly died. The gathered believers announce that His death has created a redeemed people. The words "until he comes" announce that the crucified Lord is risen and will return.</p>

<p>This proclamation is directed to the church and to anyone watching. It says that Christianity is not built on advice for self-improvement. It is built on the saving death of Jesus Christ.</p>

<p>Receiving the meal is therefore a confession: "I need the sacrifice of Christ. I trust His promise. I belong to the Lord whose death I proclaim."</p>

<h2>Communion Is Fellowship with Christ</h2>

<p>Paul calls the cup "a participation in the blood of Christ" and the bread "a participation in the body of Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:16). The word participation can also mean sharing or fellowship.</p>

<p>Christians have differed over how to describe Christ's presence in the Supper. Some emphasize His spiritual presence, others speak of a sacramental presence, and others stress memorial proclamation. These differences should be studied seriously and humbly.</p>

<p>All Christians should avoid two errors. The bread and cup are not magical objects that save apart from faith. They are also not casual refreshments with no spiritual importance. Christ appointed the meal and meets His people through His promise as they receive it in faith.</p>

<p>The risen Jesus is not physically sacrificed again. He reigns in heaven, gives His Spirit, and strengthens believers to trust the once-for-all sacrifice represented before them.</p>

<h2>One Bread Reveals One Body</h2>

<p>The Supper is communion with Christ and with His people. "Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body" (1 Corinthians 10:17).</p>

<p>This truth is central to Paul's correction of the Corinthian church. Their gatherings exposed divisions between rich and poor. Some ate abundantly while others were humiliated and left hungry. Paul said such behavior contradicted the Lord's Supper (1 Corinthians 11:17-22).</p>

<p>We cannot honor Christ's body given for us while despising members of His body around us. The Table confronts prejudice, status, selfishness, and unresolved contempt. Everyone comes with empty hands to receive the same grace.</p>

<p>Churches should therefore practice the Supper in ways that express shared belonging rather than social advantage. Believers should approach ready to pursue peace, forgive, and recognize the dignity of brothers and sisters in Christ.</p>

<h2>Examine Yourself without Hiding from Grace</h2>

<p>Paul warns against eating the bread or drinking the cup "in an unworthy manner" and tells each person to examine himself or herself (1 Corinthians 11:27-28). This warning has sometimes made sincere Christians stay away because they feel unworthy.</p>

<p>No one comes because of personal worthiness. We come because Jesus is worthy. The problem in Corinth was a manner of participation that ignored Christ's sacrifice and mistreated His people.</p>

<p>Self-examination asks honest questions: Am I trusting Christ? Am I protecting known sin? Am I refusing reconciliation? Am I treating the church with contempt? Do I understand what this meal proclaims?</p>

<p>When sin is exposed, the right response is not automatically to hide. Confess it, seek reconciliation where possible, and come depending on mercy. A person who refuses repentance should take the warning seriously and speak with church leaders. A repentant sinner is exactly the kind of person who needs the gospel announced again.</p>

<p>Examination is meant to lead into truthful participation, not endless inward inspection.</p>

<h2>Receive with Faith, Gratitude, and Attention</h2>

<p>The older Christian word Eucharist means thanksgiving. Jesus gave thanks when He took the bread and cup, and gratitude is a fitting response to grace.</p>

<p>Prepare by remembering the gospel before the service. Listen to the words spoken. When the bread is given, thank Christ for offering His body. When the cup is given, thank Him for the new covenant established by His blood. Ask the Spirit to strengthen your faith and love.</p>

<p>Do not measure the value of the meal only by emotional intensity. You may feel profound comfort, quiet gratitude, grief over sin, or little emotion at all. The promise of Christ remains more stable than your feelings.</p>

<p>Receive in company with the church. Look around and remember that Christ has welcomed people you did not choose and made them your family.</p>

<h2>Who Should Participate?</h2>

<p>The Supper belongs to those who have trusted Christ and are able to receive it as His disciples. It is a church meal, not a general symbol of goodwill.</p>

<p>Church traditions differ about the relationship between baptism, membership, age, and admission to the Table. Some invite all baptized Christians who are walking in faith; others limit participation to members or to those examined by the church. Parents and churches also differ about when baptized children should receive.</p>

<p>Respect the practice of the church administering the meal. If you are unsure whether you should participate, ask a pastor or leader before the service. That conversation should clarify the gospel, baptism, church belonging, and any unresolved discipline.</p>

<p>Visitors should not be embarrassed or pressured. Churches should explain the meal clearly so people can abstain without being treated with suspicion.</p>

<h2>The Table Looks Forward to the Kingdom</h2>

<p>Jesus told His disciples He would not drink the fruit of the vine again until the kingdom of God comes (Luke 22:18). The Supper remembers the cross and anticipates a feast.</p>

<p>Scripture pictures the future joy of God's people as "the marriage supper of the Lamb" (Revelation 19:9). One day faith will become sight, sin will be gone, divisions will be healed, and Christ's people will feast in His presence.</p>

<p>Every Lord's Supper is therefore a small act of hope. The church eats in a world of grief and conflict while announcing that Jesus will return. The meal says that history is moving toward fellowship, celebration, and the full victory of the Lamb.</p>

<p>Until that day, we remember, proclaim, participate, give thanks, and wait together.</p>
